BENEFITS

A daily formula for your mitochondria

Mitochondria are the energy-producing units of your cells – the better they work, the more efficiently your body gets the energy it needs, both during training and in everyday life. We built the Mito Caps formula on the work of Dr. Bruce Ames, the American biochemist who researched mitochondrial function and ageing: it contains acetyl-L-carnitine, R-alpha-lipoic acid, DMAE, PABA and L-ergothioneine, complemented with vitamins C, E and B6.

  • Acetyl-L-carnitine + R-alpha-lipoic acid: the two main ingredients of the formula – 375 mg and 150 mg in 3 capsules.
  • Vitamins: Vitamin C and vitamin B6 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamins C and E contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal red blood cell formation and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
  • Stimulant-free: contains no caffeine or other stimulants.
  • Clean formula: vegan, gluten-free, kosher, no added sugar.

Who is it for?

Endurance athletes, and anyone looking for a foundation formula they can take every day, all year round. Mito Caps is also part of the Daily Essential Kit, alongside Premium Insurance Caps and Race Caps Supreme; the Daily Essential Kit Plus adds EndurOmega omega-3 on top of these.

MITO CAPS FAQS

What is Mito Caps good for?

Mito Caps brings together the nutrients needed for the function of your mitochondria – the energy-producing units of your cells. We based the formula on Dr. Bruce Ames’ mitochondrial research. In the words of Dr. Bill Misner: the athlete with the most healthy, well-functioning mitochondria performs best.

Vitamin C and vitamin B6 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamins C and E contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal red blood cell formation and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.

In our view, you’ll get the most out of it if you take it every day, all year round, whether you train or not.

What’s in the Daily Essential Kit?

The Daily Essential Kit brings together the daily supplements we think are worth taking every day, whether you train or not:

  • Premium Insurance Caps – a multivitamin and mineral formula.
  • Race Caps Supreme – coenzyme Q10 and idebenone with vitamin E.
  • Mito Caps – a formula based on research into mitochondrial function.

The Daily Essential Kit Plus also includes EndurOmega fish oil with EPA and DHA.

What is L-ergothioneine?

L-ergothioneine is an amino acid derivative found mainly in mushrooms. In the body it also accumulates in the mitochondria, which is why we included it in the formula. The 3-capsule serving of Mito Caps contains 6 mg.

My urine has an unusual smell after taking Mito Caps. Is that normal?

Yes. R-alpha-lipoic acid and DMAE have a natural, sulphurous, slightly vinegary smell that you may also notice in your urine. It’s a little unusual, but completely normal and harmless.

The colour of the capsules varies slightly. Is that normal?

Yes. The natural colour of Mito Caps varies from light to medium brown – this comes from the rice bran used as a filler. A capsule can contain 280–365 mg of rice bran, and the more it contains, the darker the capsule. Slight colour differences between batches are completely normal.

How should I store it?

R-alpha-lipoic acid is sensitive to heat, moisture and air. Mito Caps doesn’t have to be refrigerated, but if you can, the fridge is the best place for it; in any case, store it in a cool, dark, dry place, never somewhere warm or in direct sunlight. Always close the lid tightly after use.

Isn’t that too much vitamin E?

The 3-capsule serving of Mito Caps contains 25 mg of vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopheryl succinate), about 8 mg per capsule. Premium Insurance Caps (about 38 mg per capsule) and Race Caps Supreme (about 89 mg per capsule) also contain vitamin E. For example, if you take 4 Premium Insurance Caps, 2 Race Caps Supreme and 2 Mito Caps a day, that adds up to about 348 mg of vitamin E a day.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set the tolerable upper intake level of vitamin E for adults at 300 mg a day. This applies to the general population; for athletes, who produce far more free radicals during training, in our view a higher, optimal daily intake (ODI) is justified. If you take anticoagulants, always check with your doctor before using products containing vitamin E.

Why is vitamin E listed in mg and not in IU?

The international unit (IU) used to be used to express the amounts of vitamins A, D and E, among others. Today labels list milligrams (mg) or micrograms (µg) – which is also what EU rules require. The active ingredient content of the products hasn’t changed.

  • Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol): 1 IU = 0.67 mg – the 3-capsule serving of Race Caps Supreme provides 400 IU = 268 mg.
  • Vitamin D: 1 IU = 0.025 µg – one softgel of EnDuro D provides 2,000 IU = 50 µg.

Are Hammer Nutrition supplements tested by an independent laboratory?

Yes. Our supplements are manufactured in accordance with US dietary supplement manufacturing regulations (21 CFR 111): every raw material used is tested for purity, potency, identity and integrity, and they are checked at every stage of production – blending, encapsulation, packaging materials, finished product – before they go on sale.

What does MFG on the packaging mean?

MFG is the manufacture date. The product keeps its quality for 4 years from the manufacture date if you store it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and excessive heat. After opening, always close the lid tightly and use within 6 months.

HOW TO USE

Dosage

  • Daily: up to 3 capsules with meals.
  • During prolonged exercise: an additional 1 capsule every 1–2 hours during training or racing.

In our view, Mito Caps is worth taking every day, all year round. Athletes who want to get more out of it can also experiment with the higher dosage.

Tip

The ingredients are heat-sensitive – if you can, store Mito Caps in the refrigerator, or at least in a cool, dark place.

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine – a compound derived from the amino acid lysine that is involved in transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria within cells.
  • R-alpha-lipoic acid (R-ALA) – a cofactor of the energy-producing enzyme complexes of the mitochondria; soluble in both water and fat.
  • DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol bitartrate) – a precursor of choline.
  • Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) – a compound related to the B-vitamin group.
  • L-ergothioneine – an amino acid derivative found mainly in mushrooms, which also accumulates in the mitochondria.
  • Vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate) – a fat-soluble, non-acidic form of vitamin C.
  • Vitamin E and vitamin B6 – Vitamin C and vitamin B6 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamins C and E contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal red blood cell formation and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
  • Enzyme blend (amylase, lipase, protease) – digestive enzymes.

Other ingredients: rice bran, vegetable capsule (plant cellulose, water).
