BENEFITS

Coenzyme Q10 and idebenone – Hammer’s original formula

Race Caps Supreme has been part of our line-up for more than three decades, and it’s still one of our most sophisticated formulas. Each capsule contains 30 mg of coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) and 30 mg of idebenone, together with vitamin E, PQQ, alpha-ketoglutarate, trimethylglycine and inosine, plus calcium, magnesium and potassium bound to citric acid cycle intermediates. We added BioPerine® black pepper extract to support absorption, and the digestive enzyme blend helps break down the capsule contents.

  • Coenzyme Q10 + idebenone: 90 mg of each in 3 capsules.
  • Vitamin E: contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
  • Dry ubiquinone: a heat-stable form that holds up well even on long, hot training sessions.
  • Clean formula: vegan, gluten-free, no added sugar.

Who is it for?

Endurance athletes, and anyone who wants to round out their daily supplement programme. In our view, you’ll get the most out of it if you take it every day, not just on training days. Race Caps Supreme is also part of the Daily Essential Kit, alongside Premium Insurance Caps and Mito Caps; the Daily Essential Kit Plus adds EndurOmega omega-3 on top of these.

RACE CAPS SUPREME FAQS

Why ubiquinone and not ubiquinol?

Both are coenzyme Q10: ubiquinone is the oxidised form and ubiquinol the reduced form, and the body constantly converts one into the other. Here are a few reasons why we put ubiquinone in Race Caps Supreme:

  • Ubiquinone has been studied far more extensively than ubiquinol, which has only been on the market since 2007.
  • In a comparative study, there was no statistically significant difference in absorption between the two forms, and coenzyme Q10 appeared in the blood almost entirely as ubiquinol, even when it was taken as ubiquinone.
  • According to research, BioPerine® black pepper extract supports absorption.
  • Dry ubiquinone is more heat-stable, so it holds up well on long, hot training sessions when you carry it with you.

How much coenzyme Q10 and idebenone is in one capsule?

Each capsule contains 30 mg of coenzyme Q10 and 30 mg of idebenone, so the 3-capsule serving provides 90 mg of each. Idebenone is structurally very similar to coenzyme Q10.

Can I take it on training days only?

Yes, but in our view you’ll get the most out of it if you take it every day – 2–3 capsules on training days and as little as 1 capsule on rest days. You can read more about coenzyme Q10 in the article More Pep in Your Step.

Isn’t that too much vitamin E?

The 3-capsule serving of Race Caps Supreme contains 268 mg of vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopheryl succinate), about 89 mg per capsule. Premium Insurance Caps (about 38 mg per capsule) and Mito Caps (about 8 mg per capsule) also contain vitamin E. For example, if you take 4 Premium Insurance Caps, 2 Race Caps Supreme and 2 Mito Caps a day, that adds up to about 348 mg of vitamin E a day.

It’s important to know that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set the tolerable upper intake level of vitamin E for adults at 300 mg a day. The optimal daily intake (ODI) we refer to is higher than that, but if you take several products containing vitamin E together, in our view it’s worth keeping an eye on your total daily intake. If you take anticoagulants, always check with your doctor before using products containing vitamin E.

Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

What’s in the Daily Essential Kit?

The Daily Essential Kit brings together the daily supplements we think are worth taking every day, whether you train or not:

  • Premium Insurance Caps – a multivitamin and mineral formula.
  • Race Caps Supreme – coenzyme Q10 and idebenone with vitamin E.
  • Mito Caps – a formula based on research into mitochondrial function.

The Daily Essential Kit Plus also includes EndurOmega fish oil with EPA and DHA.

Why is vitamin E listed in mg and not in IU?

The international unit (IU) used to be used to express the amounts of vitamins A, D and E, among others. Today labels list milligrams (mg) or micrograms (µg) – which is also what EU rules require. The active ingredient content of the products hasn’t changed.

  • Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol): 1 IU = 0.67 mg – the 3-capsule serving of Race Caps Supreme provides 400 IU = 268 mg.
  • Vitamin D: 1 IU = 0.025 µg – one softgel of EnDuro D provides 2,000 IU = 50 µg.

When should I take it?

In the first half of the day: before your main workout of the day, or with breakfast or lunch. Although it contains no caffeine or other stimulants, we don’t recommend taking it in the evening or before bed. It’s better absorbed with a meal that contains fat, because coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E are fat-soluble.

Are Hammer Nutrition supplements tested by an independent laboratory?

Yes. Our supplements are manufactured in accordance with US dietary supplement manufacturing regulations (21 CFR 111): every raw material used is tested for purity, potency, identity and integrity, and they are checked at every stage of production – blending, encapsulation, packaging materials, finished product – before they go on sale.

What does MFG on the packaging mean?

MFG is the manufacture date. The product keeps its quality for 4 years from the manufacture date if you store it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and excessive heat. After opening, always close the lid tightly and use within 6 months.

HOW TO USE

Dosage

  • 2–3 capsules a day before your main workout of the day, or with breakfast or lunch.
  • During long workouts: an additional 1 capsule per hour during exercise.
  • On rest days: 1–3 capsules to keep your intake consistent.

Tips

  • Take it with a meal that contains fat – coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E are fat-soluble.
  • It contains no stimulants, but we still recommend taking it in the first half of the day, not in the evening or before bed.
